Torrione is Petrolo’s Sangiovese-based (70%+) cuvee, first produced in 1988. Merlot and sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon help complete the picture.
I think that, Torrione, along with Montevertine’s Montevertine, are among Italy’s best value options. Especially if you can find bottles with some age on them. As a rule, Torrione will be slightly more rustic, but also somewhat cheaper than Montevertine.
We had this bottle in the summer of 2013 and the general conclusion was that it probably hasn’t reached its peak yet. That being said, it was still but a wonderful and hugely enjoyable ode to Sangiovese already. Farmer gentry indeed in the best possible sense.
