This charming middle-weight continues to deliver consistent quality both horizontally and vertically. Hailing from 4+ year old vines it is classy and cool, despite the dominance of Merlot and liberal use of new oak. It shows maturity (rather than age) and continues to carry its understated fruit alongside and in harmony with the still potent, but gentle, tannins and fresh acidity. Needs at least 1 hr of aeration to recompose itself outside the bottle.

The ’99 vintage appears the least elegant of the ’98-’01 vertical. More extracted, more tannic and needing more aeration to unfold (~2hrs). Nevertheless a very good Merlot (90%) exercise, a ready and perfectly enjoyable wine and great value.

Again and again this wine surprises me on the positive side. Especially when the price is factored in. After many repeat tastings (10+) its consistency is remarkable. I would probably put it’s peak at 2010-2011, but it still hold it own nicely and pairs with the rack of lamb handsomely. Perhaps somewhat sentimentally, but this is a 3+ for me.

Counter to the ’98-’00 vintages the ’01 is laced with fresh fruit, more youthful and is still evolving. Not as elegant as the ’98, as well balanced as the ’00, nor as rich as the ’99, its future evolution is probably most interesting of them.
