September 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:2005
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri

Ample fruit, tightly woven and a smidge nervous. Showed the least change in the glass throughout the evening, neither falling off, nor spreading its wings. Clearly needs more time to deliver its full potential.

2003 Paleo Rosso

September 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:2003
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri

This one was a clear outlier in the pack (of 7 vintages) oscillating from dusty, peppery and slightly green nose to dry hay, sawmill and varnish undertones simmering under the reasonable fruit. Restrained and austere. Perhaps just going through a phase.

2002 Paleo Rosso

September 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:2002
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri

Clean, elegant, extremely silky. Very classy and well balanced. One of the favorites in the tasting.

2000 Paleo Rosso

September 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:2000
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri

Very similar to 2001, but more vibrant, bright and softer tannic side.

1999 Paleo Rosso

September 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:1999
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri

Jar of black berries’ jam on the early nose, marmalade. Closes off somewhat after a while in the glass. It aged beautifully, gracefully even, and delivers nicely organoleptically across the board. It’s the ’98’s quieter brother.

1998 Paleo Rosso

September 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:1998
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri

The best one of the tasting for me, although in a close call with the 2002. Very intriguing balance of maturity, wisdom and youthfulness. Hardly shy on the nose, albeit stopping well before being annoyingly perfumed. Excellent balance and very much ready to drink.

2000 Le Macchiole Macchiole

Type:Red Wine
Varietal:80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot

Love this wine! They shouldn’t have retired it. Asked Cinzia about the reasons and didn’t get a solid answer. Big puzzle and a big loss.

2001 Le Macchiole Macchiole

September 16, 2014

Name:Macchiole
Vintage:2001
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese
Producer:Le Macchiole
Region:Italy / Toscana / Bolgheri
Alcohol:n/a

Notably more pronounced Cabernet stance than in ’99 or ’00. Juicy dark cherry and berries, touch of oak and fresh porcini. Signs of small leakage on the cork, so this most likely wouldn’t be the best bottle, but nothing too dire.

2001 Paleo Rosso

August 18, 2014

Name:Paleo Rosso
Vintage:2001
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Cabernet Franc
Producer:Le Macchiole

Tasted less ready than ’02, but very good form. Tannins are yet to settle, however, do a fine job playing in tune with the rest of the composition. Very good, but needs time.
