2005 Marcarini Fontanazza Dolcetto d’Alba

September 16, 2014

Name:Fontanazza Dolcetto d'Alba
Type:Red Wine
Region:Italy / Alba

Lacquer, rose, cherry reduction, liquorice with a touch of herbs on the nose. Age is good to Dolcetto’s aromatics, calming the exuberance and dialing up sophistication. On the palate, however, it feels like the major change is the middle that has wondered off. Maybe 8 years in this case is too much time.

2004 Marcarini Brunate Barolo

Name:Brunate Barolo
Type:Red Wine
Region:Italy / Piemonte

A good show of La Morra’s elegance and austerity from a traditionalist house. Long maceration, large barrels, 30+ y.o. vines. While it drinks very well, more time is needed to unlock the layer cake of nuances. At this point it is undeniably pretty, but somewhat shy. I believe a 4*rating is simply a matter of 5-10 years. Delicate nose, fennel, liquorice, menthol, leather, underbrush and hay. Round with suede tannins. Serious and delicate. Very dry and earthy, fruit plays the second fiddle here.
