Vintage:1985
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti

Fantastic! At 29 years of age the fruit is perfectly integrated into, but not yet replaced by, the earthy/leathery/ bready notes. Insane vibrancy and homogeneity of the countless layers. Very sexy and delicious! Wow.

Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese, Canaiolo
Producer:Montevertine

Elegant and delicate, without being too refined. Charming Sangiovese nose, wise and quiet. In a typical Gambelli style – it is constructed of an ethereal matter threaded onto a strong and taught frame. Delightful!!

2001 Montevertine Toscana IGT

September 17, 2014

Name:Toscana IGT
Vintage:2001
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese, Colorino del Valdarno, Canaiolo Blanco
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti
Alcohol:12.5%

Gorgeous, pure, elegant, Sangiovese. At 12.5% alc. it drinks like a song and sing like an angel. So much soul and seemingly no compromise for, what is in effect, a second wine. A testament to Giulio Gambelli’s genius.

2010 Montevertine Pian Del Ciampolo

September 16, 2014

Name:Pian Del Ciampolo
Vintage:2010
Varietal:Sangiovese, Colorino del Valdarno, Canaiolo Nero
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana
Alcohol:13.0%

Although it lacks the depth of Montevertine or Le Pergole Torte, the common DNA is evident. Delicate Sangiovese nose with cream, cherry, strawberry reduction and leather forming the core. At this age it most definitely needs a few hours of air to show the balance and open up that lovely nose.

2012 Montevertine Pian Del Ciampolo

September 16, 2014

Name:Pian Del Ciampolo
Vintage:2012
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese, Colorino del Valdarno, Canaiolo Ner
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti
Alcohol:13.0%

I dare you to find a better Chianti or quasi-Chianti for this price. The elegance is unmatched and young fresh red cherry backed with sophistication and threaded onto such mouthwatering acidity that you start thinking of Etna. Every time Pian del Ciampolo puts a childish smile on my face. Bravo, Martino Manetti!

1990 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte

September 16, 2014

Name:Le Pergole Torte
Vintage:1990
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti
Alcohol:13.0%

So young and lively!! Dominance of the primary fruit us stunning, while the awkwardness of the youth is long gone. Intense and delicate in one; really a calling card of the proper Sangiovese greatness – power of finesse. Ideally, I’d give it another 5 years to fan out its layers even more.

2002 Montevertine Toscana IGT

September 16, 2014

Name:Toscana IGT
Vintage:2002
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese, Colorino del Valdarno, Canaiolo Blanco
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti
Alcohol:n/a

Very close to 2001, despite the lesser year. However, it’s backbone feels just a wee bit less taught and the resulting chime harmony – a little more relaxed. But, by all means, this is still very much a seductive joy to drink.

1974 Montevertine Radda Chianti Classico Riserva

September 15, 2014

Name:Radda Chianti Classico Riserva
Vintage:1974
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese
Producer:Montevertine
Region:Italy / Toscana
Alcohol:n/a

History in the bottle – the precursor of Le Pergole Torte and one of the last years Montevertine was still a part of Chianti consortium. Stunning, really. A poster-child of how the terroir, proper philosophy of the owner (Manetti), the genius of the winemaker (Gambelli) and responsible aging can defy time. Not only is it alive, it is arguably right at its prime. Amazing tea, eucalyptus, tobacco and animal notes with traces of that elusive sweet ripe cherry essence. The joy and honor of time travel.
