2013 Manousakis Nostos Roussanne

September 16, 2014

Name:Nostos Roussanne
Vintage:2013
Type:White Wine
Varietal:Roussanne
Producer:Manousakis
Region:Greece / Crete
Alcohol:14.5%

Quite a serious number. Complex and layered, a little oily. First hits you with a clear buttery/toasty punch, which quickly airs out leaving a vinous, Moscato-like nose with hints of tropical fruit. Evident residual sugar. Relatively small production, new French oak every 4 years (no clue how they mix it though). Needs age. Could be very interesting.

2003 Chateau La Gaffeliere

September 16, 2014

Name:Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Vintage:2003
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer:Chateau La Gaffeliere
Region:France / Bordeaux
Alcohol:n/a

This was a half-bottle, which largely explains the level of development. Definitely in its drinking window now. Quite silky and showing some secondary aromas. Felt a little less composed than I remember La Gaffeliere to be, hens the 3.5.

1998 Vallerosa Bonci Le Case Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore

September 16, 2014

Name:Le Case Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore
Vintage:1998
Type:White Wine
Varietal:Verdicchio
Producer:Vallerosa Bonci
Region:Italy / Marche
Alcohol:12.5%

Light yellow with a greenish tint. Super juicy gooseberry, granny smith, kiwi, lemon and river stone minerality on the nose. Fresh is the word. Very smooth acidity, gently touching down on the back of the tongue. Round and supple it coats the palate with grace and long finish. Unbelievably fresh for a 15 y.o. wine.

1969 San Donato Chianti Classico Sicelle

September 16, 2014

Name:Chianti Classico Sicelle
Vintage:1969
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese
Producer:San Donato
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti
Alcohol:n/a

Surprisingly well kept and solid, but lacking something special. Light, fresh, mature acidity, some underbrush, but mostly tea nose. Probably deserves another 1/2* for the sheer respect of longevity, but in terms of delivering the enjoyment -3.5 is about right.

2013 Gaia Wild Ferment Assyrtiko

September 16, 2014

Name:Wild Ferment Assyrtiko
Vintage:2013
Type:White Wine
Varietal:Assyrtiko
Producer:Gaia
Region:Greece / Santorini
Alcohol:13.0%

A clean, mineral and crunchy crisp Assyrtiko from one of Santorini”s new-wave majors. A mix of modern and traditional approaches puts plenty of new oak and acacia of various sizes alongside wild yeasts and no temperature control at fermentation. Enough oak to balance out the acidity, but less than would make itself intrusive. Very good.

2007 Paolo Bea Sanvalentino

September 16, 2014

Name:Sanvalentino
Vintage:2007
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Sagrantino
Producer:Paolo Bea
Region:Italy / Umbria
Alcohol:13.5%

Fresh nose of under-ripe strawberry, raspberry and cherry. Traces of earth and mushrooms. Taste wise, although amply fruity, it carries quite a bit of green, solid acidity and quite dry tannins. Requires plenty of air and a few more years.

2005 Matteo Correggia Roero Roche D’Ampsej Riserva

September 16, 2014

Name:Roero Roche D'Ampsej Riserva
Vintage:2005
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Nebbiolo
Producer:Matteo Correggia
Region:Italy / Alba
Alcohol:14.5%

My favorite vintage of the ’05, 0’6, ’07. It shows more depth, better balance and a lovely nose with enough rose petals and liquorice to make it a great joy just smelling it. If you’re looking for a youngish, but ready Barolo/Nebbiolo, I’d definitely go for this Roero versus most of the modern-leaning Barolos.

1996 Chateau Malartic-Lagraviere

September 16, 2014

Name:Grand Cru Classe de Graves
Vintage:1996
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer:Chateau Malartic-Lagraviere
Region:France / Bordeaux / Graves
Alcohol:n/a

Quiet and austere. Salty, well integrated, but not too inspired. A bit thin, but not absent. I am not at all convinced it’s gone, just probably in the wrong phase right now. It didn’t want to be drunk this particular night.

1999 Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi Riserva

September 16, 2014

Name:Radici Taurasi Riserva
Vintage:1999
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Aglianico
Producer:Mastroberardino
Region:Italy / Campania
Alcohol:n/a

Mixed feelings about this wine. First time it came in a bit ascetic, thin and transparent, although clearly neither simple, nor two-dimensional. A 3*. The second time – quite wonderful. Elegant, nuanced, light-footed, red cherry, leather, reminiscent of traditionalist Chianti. A 4-4.5*. I really hope the next bottle(s) will bring more of the latter.

2011 Leroy Blagny Meursault 1er Cru

September 16, 2014

Name:Blagny Meursault 1er Cru
Vintage:2011
Type:White Wine
Varietal:Chardonnay
Producer:Leroy
Region:France / Burgundy / Cote de Beaune
Alcohol:n/a

Loved the crisp, crackling acidity of a green apple, layered with various grass and herbs (freshly cut and dried as well). Very nice even at this age. Great life ahead of it.  Not really the most affordable wine though.
