2001 Justin Isosceles Reserve

September 16, 2014

Name:Isosceles Reserve
Vintage:2001
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec
Producer:Justin Vineyards & Winery
Region:USA / Central Coast
Alcohol:n/a

The most interesting one of the vertical, showing similar qualities of the ‘ (tobacco, liquorice, eucalyptus, wood) but with an extra layer of pedigree and fruit. Alcohol is visible, as is the sweetness on the finish, but it’s still plenty intriguing.

2008 Rovellats Cava Juve Y Camps Brut Nature Gran Reserva

September 16, 2014

Name:Cava Juve Y Camps Brut Nature Gran Reserva
Vintage:2008
Type:Sparkling
Varietal:Chardonnay, Macabeo, Xarello, Parellada
Producer:Rovellats
Region:Spain / Catalunya
Alcohol:n/a

Very good price/quality as this is a serious and properly made bubbly. Plenty of ripe yellow fruit, flowers and bread on the nose transit logically into the flavor. However, I would like more elegance from the bubbles to make it irresistible.

2009 Delas Freres Seigneur de Maugiron Cote Rotie

September 16, 2014

Name:Seigneur de Maugiron Cote Rotie
Vintage:2009
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Shiraz/Syrah
Producer:Delas Freres
Region:France / Rhone / Northern Rhone
Alcohol:n/a

Not being a huge Syrah fan, I am biased. This one is, by and large, fine, young(‘ish) and somewhat straightforward. Felt like the flavor profile has not yet properly developed and carries more green notes versus the succulent berries than it should.

2009 Renato Ratti Marcenasco Barolo

September 16, 2014

Name:Marcenasco Barolo
Vintage:2009
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Nebbiolo
Producer:Renato Ratti
Region:Italy / Piemonte
Alcohol:n/a

It is honest about its modern nature and this is what makes it quite a reasonable drink. Well, this, the price, its fair execution and accessibility at a young age. However, it does require a slightly light-hearted approach to a young Barolo.

2011 Girolamo Russo ‘A Rina Etna Rosso

September 16, 2014

Name:'A Rina Etna Rosso
Vintage:2011
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio
Producer:Girolamo Russo
Region:Italy / Sicily / Etna
Alcohol:n/a

It’s all about potential at this point, and not so much about the joy of drinking it. All the right elements are there and acidity is sharp and vibrant, although overall it’s quite acutely young. Would like to taste a more mature bottle.

2000 Coniale Di Castellare Cabernet Toscana

September 16, 2014

Name:Cabernet Toscana
Vintage:2000
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Cabernet Sauvignon
Producer:Coniale Di Castellare
Region:Italy / Toscana
Alcohol:n/a

Clint Eastwood. As in – plenty buttoned up, introverted and soft-spoken, but offering loads of character if you give it time and attention. Classic Cabernet nose becomes unmistakable after a few hours of air, complemented by milk chocolate and cedar weaved in. Classy.

2006 Fontodi Chianti Classico

September 16, 2014

Name:Chianti Classico
Vintage:2006
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Sangiovese
Producer:Fontodi
Region:Italy / Toscana / Chianti
Alcohol:n/a

Juicy and smooth, perhaps too much so, with the nose of strawberries and cherries in the barnyard. Very fruity, drinkable and quite nice overall, but lacks a certain backbone or a more pronounced character, in my opinion. One of the more lightweight Chiantis.

2009 William Fevre Chablis

September 16, 2014

Name:Chablis
Vintage:2009
Type:White Wine
Varietal:Chardonnay
Producer:William Fevre
Region:France / Burgundy / Chablis
Alcohol:n/a

A very nice basic Chablis from a top-notch producer and a great price/quality situation. Dominated by the Granny Smith core which transforms into a baked apple with air exposure. All the elements are there, just not the sophistication of his cru efforts.

2005 Gianni Gagliardo Casa Langhe Favorita

September 16, 2014

Name:Casa Langhe Favorita
Vintage:2005
Type:White Wine
Varietal:Favorita
Producer:Gianni Gagliardo
Region:Italy / Piemonte / Langhe
Alcohol:n/a

Borderline 4.5*. It has a character, whether you like it or not. A unique and idiosyncratic in a way, but once it grabs you with its balance it’s hard to let go. Decant. Serve warmer than most whites. Watch it kick ass.

2001 Mascarello Giuseppe E Figlio Langhe Status

September 16, 2014

Name:Langhe Status
Vintage:2001
Type:Red Wine
Varietal:Nebbiolo, Barbera, Freisa
Producer:Mascarello Giuseppe E Figlio
Region:Italy / Piemonte / Langhe
Alcohol:n/a

An honest 3*. The balance is a little off. The tight nose is somewhat offset by the flavor. Slightly simplistic to score higher, but it doesn’t try to punch above the weight. Good for what it is. Not great, but solidly good.
